What is the new generation of IL-2 Sturmovik?

The new generation of IL-2 Sturmovik titles is developed by 1CGS and is a combat flight simulator of the World War II era and carries on the tradition created by the original IL-2 Sturmovik first released in 2001. Sturmovik recreates the aircraft, their use in the war and the environment they flew in. This latest product is a successor of the classic IL-2 Sturmovik that was a leader of the sim genre for more than 10 years. The new IL-2 is true to the ideas born by the first title with an accurate representation of aircraft and famous WWII battles.

• Unlike many other sims, AI pilots must perform the same control movements to fly their aircraft, equalizing the chances between man and machine.

• Player controllable tanks are available in multiplayer mode. They come with detailed interiors, realistic gun sights, painstakingly recreated armor placement and realistic suspension kinematics make the game even more believable.

Compatibility Between Editions

There are three different editions of IL-2 Sturmovik available - Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Moscow and Battle of Kuban. They use a common client and authorization system, which allows a customer to use them separately or as a combined product. This approach allows players of both editions to encounter each other in multiplayer mode and streamlines updates and the addition of future content. All editions of the game include the standard gameplay modes and several maps that are available to all owners of the sim.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

This edition is dedicated to the Stalingrad battle and the major events of this titanic battle. It includes the Stalingrad region map and eight (8) aircraft that flew in the skies over Stalingrad:

IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Moscow

This edition is dedicated to the events of the Battle of Moscow. The included career tells about the defense of Soviet capital and the Red Army counter offensive that followed. The Standard Edition includes the Moscow map and eight (8) aircraft which participated in this decisive battle:

IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Kuban

This edition is dedicated to the Battle of Kuban. Its career tells the story of the large scale aerial battles between the Red Air Force and the Luftwaffe which took place during the Spring of 1943 in the skies above the Taman peninsula and Novorossiysk. It adds the Kuban map for single-player modes and eight aircraft that participated in this battle:

Collector Planes

Collector Planes are additional content not included in Standard Editions that can be added to extend the one’s collection of aircraft. Premium Editions include two Collector Planes each, they can be also bought separately if you own a Standard Edition. These planes are usable in all gameplay modes. The availability of Collector Planes in a career depends on the historical availability of this plane in that theater or battle.

Our Team

The project is being developed by 1C Game Studios comprising developers of previous Sturmovik titles and 777 Studios, the creators of Rise of Flight, the best WWI combat flight simulator ever made.

We take our work on new IL-2 Sturmovik seriously, we study gigabytes of scanned documents from archives and museums all over the world. They contain unique data on aerial test flights, valuable graphs, reports and other useful information.

To model the landscape, we use topographic maps, city plans and atlases of that era and other geographic materials. Highly detailed German aerial footage also allows us to recreate the cities and towns as they were then with high level of detail.

Our unique and advanced physics engine was developed by a dedicated team of real aircraft engineers who hold advanced degrees and have worked in the best Russian aircraft design bureaus.

We also study the experience of real life pilots of WWII, read their memoirs and if possible have personal contact with veterans of the war - their feedback and observations are invaluable.

To clear up contentious points in aircraft modeling we listen to real life pilots’ and test pilots’ commentary on aircraft performance and aerial combat tactics whenever possible. We even performed intensive mock dogfights in real aircraft similar to ones used in the war to get a feel of what it was really like.
